Since my first solo travel to Malaysia in 1999, I’ve always found a special joy in finding a food court. Everyone gets to choose their preferred cuisine and then sit together and enjoy.
My early encounters with food courts helped me learn about different types of Malay cuisine (nasi goreng, rendang) – and usually enjoy an hour or two or air conditioning to escape from the humidity. More recently, they mean Mr T and I can both eat something we really want, without reviewing menu boards outside every restaurant in town.
My favourite ones are those with small, independent street food offerings, just like these ones from our travels over the last few years…

Oslo Street Food – one of my all-time favourites – found by chance in 2020 when we were on our way to see OMD, revisited in 2023 whilst at a conference.
Music playing and cuisine of every kind, including puddings!
Ponsonby International Food Court – a quirky place located in the Auckland suburb – we visiting in 2019, staying at a great AirBnB just round the corner with a view of the sky tower.
I had an amazing curry and wrote in my journal that I was reminded of my first trip to Malaysia!

Adelaide Central Market – a market and a food court all in one. We visited in 2015, one of the last stops on our big trip to Australia and New Zealand.
I think we visited on a rainy day, so it provided a great shelter from the storms!
Lau Pau Sat in Singapore – an amazing food court with seating inside and out, South East Asian cuisine of every type.
I’m sure it took me a while to choose what to eat… we came here after having Singapore Slings at Raffles Hotel.

The Food Court at Johor Bahru bus station – combining two of my favourite travel experiences as we had to cross a border to get there.
In a flashback to my earliest food court experiences, I think we had nasi goreng and beef rendang for our lunch.
Baltic Market in Liverpool – our most recent food court experience, Mr T. had a burger and I had something teriyaki.
The cocktail bar in the centre is worth a look too.

We’ll keep looking – many more food courts to be found – and keep updating this post.
