I’m Liz and 27 Hours in Twizel is part memoir, part travel philosophy, part photography exhibition and part mindfulness exercise.
My love of travel can be traced back to my 7-year old self, travelling around Europe with my sister, mum and dad, a little red backpack and a passport for me and my teddy bear. From the very beginning, I’ve loved to document my travels and share those stories – starting with Spotters Guides and I Spy books as a child; switching to journals, photo albums, social media and online blogging as time has passed. The stories are based on our own adventures and my hope is that they will inspire you to explore the world too.
My partner in travel adventures is Jon – you’ll spot him in lots of photos and he’ll get in a mention in a few of the posts too. We met in New Zealand in 2008 and we’ve been married and based in Stoke-on-Trent since 2009.

If Jon is choosing our destination, it is likely there will be a cricket match, Doctor Who exhibition or OMD gig happening nearby. I’m usually looking for a sunset, sea view or a tower to climb. Our destinations will be a mixture of urban and rural; we love a self-guided walking tour. There will always be a round of crazy golf and plenty of cake.
In choosing places to stay, we love a room with a view and/or a quirky staircase. I hate brown curtains and will never book a hotel room if that’s what is showing in the photos. Jon’s not a fan of hostels with shared bathrooms, but will allow an exemption for places with funny names (Fat Cod Backpackers in Picton).
Most of our travels on our public transport and we love to find a reason to get off the bus, train, boat or plane and keep on exploring. We hope you will join us on our journeys.
Why 27 Hours in Twizel?
A slight mix-up involving bus timetables and hotel bookings meant we would be “stranded” in Twizel for about 27 hours.
